Pourpre violacé. Magnifique bouquet, tellement invitant, tant par sa complexité que par son charme. Notes de framboises, de mûres, de bois de réglisse et de pain d’épices. En bouche le vin est juteux et friand. Il est doté de tannins puissants mais bien intégrés et d’une structure racée qui contrecarre la suprématie tannique. Un vin exceptionnel, sapide, puissant et séduisant ! Un marathonien qui danse le rock’n’roll !  2025-2055

La robe affiche une bonne densité avec des reflets violets. Le nez très intense mêle des arômes de fumé et de fruits rouges à une petite pointe végétale. Souple en attaque avec un joli milieu de bouche bien équilibré, le vin est doté d’une belle longueur et d’une superbe finale expressive. Ce vin très élégant peut se boire sur le fruit, mais il vaut mieux attendre quelques années.

The Bourgneuf 2013 has a very sensual bouquet with raspberry, kirsch and a touch of Provençal herbs. With continued aeration there is a hint of seaweed that surfaces. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft opening.
There is decent weight to this Bourgneuf with dark plum and raspberry fruit, although it is missing a little structure towards the finish. Nevertheless, one can appreciate the easy-drinking style and it finishes with some swagger, attired in some lovely strawberry fruit.

The estate is fairly low down the Pomerol slope. It has a very scented nose, with perfumed black cherry, nuanced with the lifted aromatics of wild herbs, and a powdery, dusty, vanilla freshness. The texture is very elegant, precise, with tightly wrapped medium-bodied texture, very correct in style, with quite incisive acidity, and a gentle bed of soft tannins in the background. It has a little length to it as well. Overall this is a charming style, of good quality.

L’âme de ce vin doit être féminine, ce n’est pas possible qu’un gars fasse autant de choses à la fois ! La mise en bouche est friande, fruitée, juteuse et gourmande. Le palais est marqué par la fraîcheur et l’intensité aromatique. Le corps bénéficie de tannins solides, aux grains fins, qui assurent parfaitement les arrières en compagnie de la structure acide. Cette dernière soutient idéalement l’expression fruitée en finale et confère du tonus. Quelle superbe réussite sur 2018. The 2019 Bourgneuf is classy and polished in the understated style that is the norm here. Dark cherry, plum and espresso come together in a soft, creamy wine with gorgeous texture, radiance and suppleness to match its classic mid-weight personality. Bourgneuf is never a big Pomerol, but rather a wine that speaks to balance and harmony, both of which it has in spades. The 2019 is classy as always, silky, and nuanced.

Hidden Gem: Bourgneuf – possibly the best Bourgneuf ever from  winemaker Frédérique Vayron.The 2019 Bourgneuf was picked from 19 to 30 September and matured in 35% new oak. It has a pretty bouquet, refined and pure with blackberry, briary and touches of orange blossom. This is very well defined, the aromatics do not try to overreach themselves. The palate is crisp on the entry with crunchy red fruit, tertiary in style, hints of truffle, brine and black pepper towards the finish. There is a « natural swagger » about this Bourgneuf, probably earlier drinking than other Pomerols, yet with breeding and class from the Vayron Family. Tasted twice with consitent notes.

Bourgneuf’s consulting oenologist is Stéphane Toutoundji, one of the members of Thomas Duclos oenoteam. A lot of violets here on the nose intermixed with blueberries and black cherries, very distinctive and noble. On the palate, it’s refined with striking complexity and harmony between creamy berries and sweet grained tannin. Lingering and long finish. A beautiful effort from hands of the very talented winemaker, Frederique Vayron and it deserves all 95p in rating!

Sumptuous dark-fleshed fruit, spice, chocolate and dried flowers are all dialed up. Readers who have known Bourgneuf for years may find the 2020 a bit over the top. I am really interested to see where this direction goes.

The 2020 Bourgneuf has closed up a little on the nose post-bottling : blackberry, graphite, subtle loamy aromas and just a whiff of sea spray. Fine delineation and commendable complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, quite structured and perhaps more « serious » than its showing from barrel. Generous helpings of cracked black pepper enliven the second half, firm grip with a very nicely proportioned finish. This is an excellent Bourgneuf that should give 20+ years of drinking pleasure.

A property fairly well down the Pomerol slope, but which experience tells me has been doing good things during the past decade. Dark and dusty, the nose has a sense of conviction, marrying lightly mentholated black summer fruits, notably blackcurrant and blackberry, complicated by threads of violets, chamomile and liquor ice, with a finely polished base of tobacco-pouch oak. The palate maintains a medium-bodied poise, but carries fresh scents of perfumed black fruits, intertwined with the rather scented oak hinted at aromatically. There is a little touch of minerality here too, and the tannins are polished and very finely grained, giving it a fresh and convincing build, with good energy and grip in the finish, the oak and tannin lingering long here. This remains an under-rated and under-the-radar property which provides good quality drinking at a fair price (or at least it was the last time I bought some). Well done.

The 2021 Bourgneuf has turned out better than I anticipated, and one senses its proximity to Trotanoy more clearly than was the case from barrel. Exhibiting aromas of sweet berries, cherries and licorice, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with good depth at the core, framed by sweet structuring tannins. While it will offer plenty of near-term appeal, don’t discount its capacity to age.

The 2022 Bourgneuf is a wine that I tasted three times in Bordeaux, and none of them really set my pulse racing. However, a sample tasted after my return to London seems much more promising. The nose here is backward and demands time to open in the glass, almost reluctantly offering blackberries, blueberry and crushed iris flower scents. It is certainly not extravagant. The palate is much more intense and delineated than the samples tasted in Bordeaux, ironically fresher with a slightly granular texture, a silver bead of acidity, commendable sapidity and length. This correlates far more with what I would have expected from a Pomerol that has progressed so much in recent years.

The 2023 Bourgneuf is an especially impressive effort that underlines this estate’s proximity to Trotanoy (one block actually reaches the outbuildings of Trotanoy). Unwinding in the glass with aromas of mulberries, exotic spices, licorice, incense and lilac, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with a dense, creamy core of concentrated fruit framed by a serious chassis of sweet, powdery tannin. This is likely to number among the sleepers of the vintage.

Crushed rocks, mint, lavender, spice, rose petal and sweet pipe tobacco are some of nuances that take shape in the glass. More than anything else, the 2023 is a Pomerol that epitomizes understated finesse. This is another terrific effort from the Vayron family. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Bourgneuf was picked September 12 to 27. This has an enticing bouquet with black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, cohesive and focused with neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure. A keen line of acidity cuts through the black cherries and bilberry fruit, closing with a tangy, saline finish that urges you back for more. Bravo. This is a fine Pomerol from what continues to be an under-estimated estate.

I tasted it on three occasions: at the property, Jean-Pierre Moueix, and Grand Cercle, and the wine was truly impressive everywhere! It is beautifully scented and intense on the nose, with black cherries, blueberries, violets, and black truffle. To be honest, I don’t recall any recent vintages of Bourgneuf having such a broad aromatic palette. It is coated on the palate with great complexity and structure, a splendid midpalate, silky tannin, and a lingering finish. A winner! At the property, I have additionally tasted the fabulously made 2019 (96p), a bit restrained 2020 (95p) and 2021 (93p).

Bourgneuf (Pomerol; 90% Merlot; 10% Cabernet Franc; neighbouring Trotanoy and starting to taste like it does; tasted at Bélair-Monange in the J-P Moueix flight). Introduced later in the line-up here than it used to be (after La Grave à Pomerol), reflecting the real progress made in recent vintages. It is also notable that this is the place in the line-up where the quality really starts to rise (there is always one in the Moueix tasting that marks the ascent towards the summit). Sumptuous, with radiant and quite vertical dark berry and stone fruits (more of the former, less of the latter). I love too the graphite and pencil shaving note that is already evident. This is floral too – violets and dark chocolate scented with violet. Dark and intense, cool and yet soft and luscious. Succulent and seductive. Something of a coup de coeur. The best yet from here and the antithesis of the rusticity I used to associate with this wine.

A rather sweet and smoky fruit profile on the nose, with sweet buttered bramble and perfumed red cherry on the nose, which leads to a rather restrained palate, with peppered red cherry, bramble and wild rose set in a modestly creamed texture, wrapped up in a fairly firm grain of tannins. This has charm, with a slightly loose-knit feel to the composition, but an attractive perfume. A good result in a more challenging vintage. Tasted twice with consistent findings.

Clean saline notes run through a core of inky dark fruit, cedar, new leather, incense, licorice, lavender and dried herbs. Medium in body and poised, with tons of class, Bourgneuf is especially fine in 2024. I loved it. Tasted three times.

The 2024 Bourgneuf, aged one-third in new barrels, has a composed and harmonious bouquet with blackcurrant, briar and light truffle scents unfolding in the glass. This is well defined and the oak is well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with crisp black fruit, fine tannins and a minerally finish. What a delicious Pomerol from this estate that has a useful habit of over-performing !

Situé sur de très belles argiles Bourgneuf en 2024 a engendré un vin très fin, délicat et dense à la fois avec une identité qui lui est propre. Ce millésime béné-ficie de tous les efforts réalisés ces dernières années en faveur de la vie des sols. La robe est grenat avec de jolis arômes épicés. L’attaque est fraîche avec un vin de bonne densité, un peu plus sérieux que d’habitude, les tannins sont soyeux et le vin de bonne longueur.

Comme à son habitude, Bourgneuf se plaît à poser les jalons d’entrée. Il sait qui il est, mais il n’a jamais aimé la démonstration. Il met juste les points sur les i et fait ce qu’il a à faire, de manière consciencieuse et, évidemment, performante. Les notes de baies noires combinées à des nuances de réglisse et de poivre soulignent la complexité et la fraîcheur présente. En bouche, Bourgneuf est prudent, précis et néanmoins imposant. Ses tannins, parfaitement intégrés, sont vigoureux et en phase avec le côté tonique de la structure acide. Un vin sapide et goûteux oscillant entre baroque et hip-hop, respectivement Bach et Jay-Z. 2028-2049
